Welcome to FrockTalk, the web’s only costume-based movie review site. The goal of Frocktalk is to shed light on the magnificent artistry of costume design in motion pictures. Reviews on this site are written by working costume designers in the entertainment industry – people who know, better than anyone, what it takes to make it all happen. The focus of FrockTalk is not to comment on the big flashy costume dramas, but to call attention to the seemingly ordinary costume design work in film that silently and persuasively moves the audience toward understanding the characters. Costume design for motion pictures is an art form that deserves more recognition than it usually gets. Fancy, pretty costumes do not always equal effective, appropriate costumes. The art of the costume is in letting the audience know who the character is, before the actor even has a chance to open his mouth. Read on, and enjoy. ** CAUTION: ALL REVIEWS CONTAIN SPOILERS! **

EGOT, ECOT, and Awardsapalooza!

awardapaloozasm

With the big Tony Awards announcements yesterday, it got me thinking.  There is an unofficial “grand slam” category of awards winning known as the EGOT.  This means Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony.  Only twelve people in history have ever won this quadruple crown, and they have been actors, directors, music department people (composers) and producers.  To win a Grammy, you must have some kind of musical (or voiceover/spoken word) talent.  That narrows the field considerably, and for most costume designers, puts us out of the running for EGOT.

I propose something a bit more attainable.  The ECOT.  Emmy, CDG Award, Oscar, Tony.  That seems reasonable, right?  Who might be contenders for this award?  Certainly Edith Head is out – she pre-dated the CDG Awards… but who might stand a chance to achieve this in our world today?  Looking forward to your thoughts – here and on Twitter @Frocktalk!

Last night was the big opening gala for FIDM’s 22nd annual “Art of Motion Picture Costume Design” exhibition.  Frocktalk contributor Lauren Fonville and I tore it up – chatting with designers and ooh-ing and aah-ing over the many beautiful works of costume art on display. The exhibit showcased costumes from twenty-one films of 2013, as well as last year’s Oscar winner, ‘Anna Karenina’.

Awardsapalooza 2013: Nomination Rumination!

I apologize for the brief, succinct posting of the nominees for the CDG awards. I was in the middle of a production meeting when the news broke (!) so – don’t tell anyone – but I was busy typing away here at Frocktalk when I probably should have been listening to something important being explained by our first AD. So if we come up empty-handed on some big day on this movie and we don’t have what we need? Sorry, Albert! My bad!

Awardsapalooza: Oscar Nominations!!!

Congratulations to this year’s Academy Award nominees for outstanding achievement in costume design:

Jacqueline Durran: ANNA KARENINA

Paco Delgado: LES MISERABLES

Joanna Johnston: LINCOLN

Eiko Ishioka: MIRROR, MIRROR

Colleen Atwood: SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

Oddly, the Academy’s website glitch (indicating that Sharen Davis had been nominated for her fabulous work on Django Unchained) did not turn out to be accurate.  Wait and see until the CDG Nominations on January 17, 2013 for more nominations, Frocktalkers!!  Congrats to all the nominees, their directors, and their costume teams!
