Welcome to FrockTalk, the web’s only costume-based movie review site. The goal of Frocktalk is to shed light on the magnificent artistry of costume design in motion pictures. Reviews on this site are written by working costume designers in the entertainment industry – people who know, better than anyone, what it takes to make it all happen. The focus of FrockTalk is not to comment on the big flashy costume dramas, but to call attention to the seemingly ordinary costume design work in film that silently and persuasively moves the audience toward understanding the characters. Costume design for motion pictures is an art form that deserves more recognition than it usually gets. Fancy, pretty costumes do not always equal effective, appropriate costumes. The art of the costume is in letting the audience know who the character is, before the actor even has a chance to open his mouth. Read on, and enjoy. ** CAUTION: ALL REVIEWS CONTAIN SPOILERS! **

Technology: Good/Technology: Bad

The internet has forever changed the way we work in this business. Everyone from the craft service person to the producer utilizes the internet to enhance his or her work.  The costume department is no exception – we shop like crazy online, at all hours of the day, using overnight shipping to bridge the gap.  We can research ideas with laser-like precision.  It’s pretty awesome.  But with all the ease that technology brings, it also brings other, harsher consequences.

Everyone has opinions about what they see in movies or television.  However, back in the days before Twitter, Facebook and all the other social media sites, a person had no platform for spewing those opinions.  Now, any schmuck with a computer or smart phone can say whatever comes to mind, anonymously, about anyone or anything without personal consequence to himself.  The crazy thing is, now, people in positions of authority actually listen.  Get enough Twitter users on a Schadenfreude-tinged bender about something they dislike about a movie or a TV show, and it can get someone fired.

HALLOWEEN Costume Ideas 2011!!!

The costume truck at Halloween

The costume truck at Halloween

This year, my costume selections are veering toward popular culture. I went on a MEME kick, and man there are some funny ideas out there that, if you’re hip to what’s hip, you will really love. You will not find disgusting “slutty vampire”, “naughty nurse”, or “sassy pirate” costumes in this bunch, because we costume people really don’t need to pander, do we? It’s not called “Whoreloween”; it’s HALLOWeen. Hallowed evening – the most special night of the year for costume designers. I have put together twenty-five or so costume ideas for you. I have included the original reference from pop culture or the internet for all costumes, and I have included links to sites where you can buy costume pieces to complete your look. So, without further ado, here are my 2011 Halloween ideas:

Another Reason to NOT use Internet Explorer

Reason number one, of course, is that Internet Explorer is not compatible with many websites, including Frocktalk. Reason number two: remember that pesky little security problem Google was having in China? Their hack attack was made possible due to a flaw in INTERNET EXPLORER. That’s right. Microsoft has issued an emergency patch for IE users, but your best bet is to STOP using IE and switch to another web browser like Firefox (free download here), Safari (free download here), or Google Chrome (free download here).

Articles about the IE weakness leading to the hack of Google in China are HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE. The patch, if you are still crazy enough to use Internet Explorer, is available HERE.

Browse safely, friends!

Internet Explorer is NOT Frocktalk’s Friend.

I posted about the Frocktalkability issues with Internet Explorer a few months back, but this is a topic that needs revisiting.  Internet Explorer, while one of the world’s most widely available (meaning pre-loaded) web browsers on the market, is decidedly NOT the best.  Case in point here at Frocktalk.  If you are using ANY version of IE to navigate the Internet, you will not be able to see Frocktalk in all of its blazing, good-time glory.  Why?  Compatibility issues.  Frocktalk is best viewed using Mozilla’s FIREFOX (free download here), Safari (free download here) or Google Chrome (free download here).  I am going to go out on a limb, and say that once you try these other browsers, you will NEVER go back to Internet Explorer.  Make a liar out of me; I dare you!!

Have a great weekend!

Internet Explorer 8 Frocktalkability Issues

Greetings everyone – just wanted to let you know that we are uncovering some issues with the way to the site looks when viewed with Internet Explorer 8. Frocktalk is optimally viewed using Firefox, Safari, and Google Chrome. We are working out the kinks here to try to find a happy medium (where IE8 users can see the site as it is intended), but in the meantime, if you’d like to experience Frocktalk in all of its cinematic glory, try Firefox!

Stay tuned for the sound of dueling banjos!!
