It’s a big week in the life of KB, y’all! Two projects I’ve worked my butt off on are debuting, and I want to tell you about all of it. First, Insidious Chapter 2 comes out in theaters on Friday the 13th. If you saw Insidious, you know there were some hanging chads at the end there… I am looking forward to seeing the film – I haven’t seen any of it edited or anything. It will be a nerve-wracking surprise to be in the theater, seeing the film for the first time along with audience members. What’s done is done, and I won’t be able to change it. I’m sorry to be missing the premiere; I understand that Universal Studios is doing a whole Insidious-themed haunted house this year – sounds like FUN! It would be so cool to see that. I’m sad to be out of town, missing this! I wonder what they will do with the costumes…?! If any of you go to this haunted house, will you please take pictures for me? Thanks! ☺
Second, on Monday night at 9PM/8PM Central on FOX… it’s SLEEPY HOLLOW!!! That’s what I’ve been doing here in North Carolina. The pilot was designed by the amazing and talented Sanja Hays, and I am designing the rest of the season. As much as I’ve said I would never design television, I have to tell you – this crew is a dream, and everyone working on the show has been so supportive, helpful and awesome. I’m grateful to be on this show, because it has changed my mind about television, and brought me a new appreciation for the art form. We are working our butts off, and I really hope you like the show. Tune in on Monday nights! Hope you all have a good week – stay tuned for more info to come!
Angels costume house, London.
As part of my trip to London, I visited Angels costume house. Frocktalkers, it was amazing to see this place. I remember way back in 1992, I was interning on the Francis Ford Coppola film Dracula. Our associate costume designer Richard Shissler had made a trip to London to pull costumes for some of our massive crowd scenes. My job was to unpack the boxes that arrived from London. I remember gasping with delight and awe at the assortment of beautiful Victorian garments – many of them antiques, originals – that arrived. Where did these garments come from? Angels costume house.

Dear Kristin: I am an aspiring costume designer, having switched careers from fashion design. I haven’t looked back since, and it’s been tough, but great. One of my next goals is to join the Costume Designer’s Guild. I have been hard at work finding my way onto any indie feature I can, to learn as much as I can and just continue to gain experience. I was thinking of applying to the Guild (when I feel ready and have some funds saved up) as an assistant costume designer, so I can learn under more experienced costume designers. Is it difficult to then upgrade to costume designer, once I have some union experience under my belt? I’m in no rush to design a union feature as a costume designer; I’m just wondering if I should apply as a costume designer and then just look for assistant costume designer jobs instead, OR if I should apply as an assistant costume designer, and then upgrade.

Look, I know times are tough here, and costuming is a competitive business, but take a look at this letter. I left the grammar and spelling alone, and all names are redacted so no one gets sued. On a quiet, tree-lined street in between Valley Village and the NoHo Arts District, the soothing hum of sewing machines fills the air. Costume Co-op, founded by John van Hout, Clifford Chally and David Matwijkow, is a union costume shop, featuring made-to-order construction, aging and dying, foam sculpting and millinery all under one roof.
