The focus of FrockTalk is not to comment on the big flashy costume dramas, but to call attention to the seemingly ordinary costume design work in film that silently and persuasively moves the audience toward understanding the characters. Costume design for motion pictures is an art form that deserves more recognition than it usually gets. Fancy, pretty costumes do not always equal effective, appropriate costumes. Awardsapalooza 2009/10: The Costume Designers Guild Awards!

Congratulations to last night’s CDG Award winners!   They are:

In the Film categories:  Fantasy – Monique Prudhomme, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus; Period – Sandy Powell, The Young Victoria; Contemporary – Doug Hall, Crazy Heart.

And for television:  Contemporary – Lou Eyrich for Glee; Period – Janie Bryant for Mad Men; Miniseries/Movie – Catherine Marie Thomas for Grey Gardens.  In the commercial costume design category, Casey Storm won for his work on the Milkquarius campaign.

Audrey Fisher: It’s In Her Blood

Frocktalk reporters Anthony Tran, JoAnn Orr, and Laura Wong sunk their teeth into Audrey Fisher, 2010 Costume Designers Guild Award nominee for HBO’s True Blood. Audrey was very poised and gracious; she answered our barrage of questions like a true champ.

FT: What are your impressions of this costume exhibit?

AF: It’s always so inspirational to see the costumes up close. It gives me a huge sense of accomplishment for the other designers to see how beautiful things are close up.

Awardsapalooza 2009/2010: 18th Annual FIDM Event!

Good news!  Good news!  Here at Frocktalk, we just received the all-clear from FIDM to report on the 18th annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design opening.  We will be providing wall-to-wall coverage of the festivities with several roving reporters and photographers, so if you see us coming, smile and say CHEESE!  We are all really getting excited about this event.  However, the big question remains:  WHAT TO WEAR?!?!  Stand by!
