Welcome to FrockTalk, the web’s only costume-based movie review site. The goal of Frocktalk is to shed light on the magnificent artistry of costume design in motion pictures. Reviews on this site are written by working costume designers in the entertainment industry – people who know, better than anyone, what it takes to make it all happen.
The focus of FrockTalk is not to comment on the big flashy costume dramas, but to call attention to the seemingly ordinary costume design work in film that silently and persuasively moves the audience toward understanding the characters. Costume design for motion pictures is an art form that deserves more recognition than it usually gets. Fancy, pretty costumes do not always equal effective, appropriate costumes. The art of the costume is in letting the audience know who the character is, before the actor even has a chance to open his mouth. Read on, and enjoy.
So today at the Con, Saturday, was my day to spend with Baby Shrek and Mini Lightning McQueen (hereafter “MLMcQ”). We set out at mid-day to avoid crowds trying to mob Baby Shrek for autographs or earwax candles. It was a good idea. Saturday is notoriously the most crowded, crazy day at Comic Con. This year was no exception. Crowds were heavy and thick, and not everyone remembered to wear deodorant (or, for that matter, not everyone remembered to NOT STAB ANYONE).

They will be tweeting live from the Masquerade Ball - which is great, because I don’t recall anyone doing that in the past - get your Masquerade costume contest winners while they are steaming hot!

EVERY DAY from 9A - 7P at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel (just south of the Convention Center) is the COSTUME DESIGN ILLUSTRATION EXHIBIT. The exhibit is in the AQUA level, rooms 311 and 312. There are going to be a LOT of cool illustrations there, including some that I did for Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2! Check it out!
Friday at 11AM in room 32 AB it’s the CDG TELEVISION PANEL, with designers Audrey Fisher (True Blood), Ane Crabtree (Justified), Shawna Trpcic (Firefly), Pamela Shaw (Assistant Designer, Vampire Diaries), Jennifer Eve (Assistant Designer, Glee).
Friday from 12Noon - 1PM in the Sails Pavilion you can get AUTOGRAPHS from all the costume designers from the television panel. And just between you and me, they will probably have some cool ephemera from their shows that they will sign for you!
Friday at 2:15PM in Hall H don’t miss Costume Designer Wendy Chuck and the panel for the upcoming film DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK!
Friday at 5:15PM, in Ballroom 20, it’s Costume Designer Audrey Fisher and the TRUE BLOOD panel!
Okay, Comic Con-goers… here’s the deal! You wear costumes to the ‘Con, you get prizes. Just an overview: the CDG will be awarding ribbons daily for the best costumes they see in the halls of Comic Con. Then, Saturday night, the big Masquerade Ball takes place. The CDG will be giving an award for their favorite costume at the Ball, and the award includes a gift certificate to ISW - aka International Silks and Woolens. Believe me, you want this gift certificate. The David C. Copley Award - given by the David C. Copley Center for the Study of Costume Design - will also be given to an outstanding Masquerade Ball participant. The Copley award comes with a $100 cash prize and a copy of the awesome bookDressed, by Deborah Nadoolman Landis!

Studio City, CA July 13, 2010 – A sea of close to 150,000 Comic-Con attendees will swarm the San Diego Convention Center July 21-25, dressed in costumes they made impersonating their favorite idol, action hero, or theme. Many of these costumes were originally designed and illustrated by professional Costume Designers and Costume Illustrators for movies and television shows. In its sixth year at Comic-Con, the CDG continues to create an exciting Comic-con experience for costume enthusiasts.

Hi frocktalkers! This is my final post from and about Comic Con 2009. I attended the masquerade last Saturday night, and it was fantastic. I had to leave at the halfway point, unfortunately, but I wanted to share my photos with you.
Additionally, the news is that I will be teaching a class at UCLA this fall, for MFA/Costume students. It’s a very exciting opportunity. I will be teaching 8 out of 10 classes in costume design, while costume supervisor extraordinaire Heidi Higginbotham will be teaching 2 out of 10 classes in script breakdown, budgeting, and running the department.
