Welcome to FrockTalk, the web’s only costume-based movie review site. The goal of Frocktalk is to shed light on the magnificent artistry of costume design in motion pictures. Reviews on this site are written by working costume designers in the entertainment industry – people who know, better than anyone, what it takes to make it all happen. The focus of FrockTalk is not to comment on the big flashy costume dramas, but to call attention to the seemingly ordinary costume design work in film that silently and persuasively moves the audience toward understanding the characters. Costume design for motion pictures is an art form that deserves more recognition than it usually gets. Fancy, pretty costumes do not always equal effective, appropriate costumes. The art of the costume is in letting the audience know who the character is, before the actor even has a chance to open his mouth. Read on, and enjoy. ** CAUTION: ALL REVIEWS CONTAIN SPOILERS! **

Hi there, Frocktalkers! Just wanted to point out all the activity that’s going on over at Twitter in the name of Frocktalk! I live-tweeted the UCLA Copley Center ‘Sketch2Screen’ Costume panel this past week, and I’m about to live-tweet the Oscars. Spring Breakers

Release Date: 3-22-13 (USA)

Review Date: 3-26-13

Runtime: 94 min.

Period: Contemporary

Costume Designer:  Heidi Bivens

Having just seen Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, the words that come to my mind:  WOAH.  WTF.  OMG.  NO WAY.  This is a nightmare of a movie, in the very best sense – it has haunted my dreams.  Marketed oddly as a good-times comedy, it couldn’t be further from the reality of what this movie actually is – a nihilistic meditation on youth, freedom, and the meaning of life.  Starring Disney poster girls Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez alongside cinematic chameleon James Franco, this film destroys any kind of squeaky-cleanness they might have once had.  It’s brilliant, it’s brash, and it’s scary as hell.

Irene Sharaff's sketch for Brigadoon

Happy Halloween, everyone.  This is officially OUR holiday, so have a blast tonight!!  I wanted to show you something that is pretty beautiful and amazing.  I am sorry I didn’t know about it earlier, but wanted to share it with you just the same.  Icollector had a huge auction of vintage costume sketches on their site recently.  You can see them here.  They had a ton of sketches from the likes of Walter Plunkett, Travis Banton, Irene, Anthea Sylbert, Valles, Edith Head, Travilla, Irene Sharaff, Orry Kelly and many more.  It is truly something to behold.

Have a happy and safe Halloween, Frocktalkers!!
